Synopsis
Religion is humanity’s attempt to explain the “how” and “why” of existence—later concentrating only on the “why”—in the dialogue of the material and spiritual realm, of which humans are the most and ever-more complex intertwining we know.
This may sound complicated and controversial. Questions might arise immediately like these:
Does he imply that religion originates with humankind, denying its God-given nature?
- Why would one ever split the how of existence from the why? Doesn’t religion explain everything?
- What does he mean by humans being the material and spiritual intertwined?
- And why does he say that we are ever more complex?
Add your own to the list.
I will analyze this statement by introducing a model called Spiral Dynamics, demonstrating how this model is reflected throughout the Bible and our relationship with the divine. It can also be used to uncover the various interpretations that the biblical narrative has undergone over time.
A few more things:
I love the Bible. I see the benefits of its written form, especially when I think about the time after the invention of the printing press. It made the Reformation possible. It helped faith to survive during a period when the predominant statement about God came from Friedrich Nietzsche, sadly proclaiming the death of God.
I love the written text; otherwise, I would not write a book. But frankly, writing is nothing compared to a good dialogue in person, where we can inspire each other and get our intuition, imagination, reason, and knowledge base running.
Rest assured that I will not be offended if you cannot follow me on my path. Unless you make your reservations public, I might not even know. More importantly, one of the book’s findings will be that while we can learn from each other, our pathways are unique. Whether I can send you on a journey or help you reassure yourself that your current position is where you ought to be, it’s all good.
